The University of Amsterdam and the Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences select LIBNOVA as their digital preservation solution partner

LIBNOVA is selected by the library of the UvA and AUAS to take their OAIS-compliant digital depot in production, following an extensive market consultation and a proof of concept

LIBNOVA, worldwide leader in digital preservation, has been selected by the University of Amsterdam (UvA), the Netherland’s largest university, and the Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences (AUAS), one of the largest research universities in Europe, to implement their OAIS-compliant digital depot for their ingestion and preservation workflows.

The UvA and the AUAS treasure a unique and invaluable collection of digitized and digital-born objects, mostly from the Allard Pierson’s library, museum and archive collections for which the library is responsible. Up to now, the Library lacks a solution for long-term preservation of this content. After a European tender, which included a live proof of concept, LIBNOVA was awarded the contract for this new repository.

Using LIBSAFE, LIBNOVA’s digital preservation platform, the Library of the UvA and AUAS will manage a unified solution for the storage, access and long-term preservation of digitized and digital-born objects, according to the OAIS model and the ISO 16363 standard, as is the best practice for museums, archives and libraries.

The project includes consultancy to define new processing workflows and to use the LIBSAFE API to integrate with ArchivesSpace, ExLibris Alma and other components.

Gerard Nijsten, Director of the UvA/AUAS library: “We are very pleased with our partnership with LIBNOVA. As a library with a large heritage collection, we have a long-term responsibility for these precious and rare materials. Ongoing digitization of physical objects, and the increase of digital-born objects especially in the area of personal archives, bring us a new challenge. Our new Digital Depot, based on the LIBSAFE software, is essential to preserve and open up our digital collections for future research.

Antonio G. Martinez, LIBNOVA’s CEO, comments “The UvA team impressed us right from the tender consultation phase of their procurement process. We saw commitment, transparency, and a fair way to benchmark market options right from day one. Our promise is to deliver the most advanced digital preservation platform to the community and the best way to achieve it is by working close to leading organizations like the UvA and the AUAS.

Teo Redondo, LIBNOVA’s Chief Customer Officer, adds, “We were delighted for the UvA and AUAS to select us as their digital preservation partners, to help them safeguard their invaluable collections of digital assets and to learn from their present and future needs to drive our continuous innovation on a long-term basis.

The University of Amsterdam and the Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences team up with the large community of more than 50 academic institutions, libraries, museums and research organizations who have already trusted LIBNOVA’s digital preservation platform to safeguard, protect and preserve their digital cultural heritage and research datasets.
